This course is not only an entry level
course for the new user, but is also
relevant to existing users wanting
to upgrade or enhance their existing
3d skills.
The course is comprised of a series
of regular hands on life drawing classes
used as a means for the 3d digital
artist or animator to gain a basic
comprehension for the depiction of
form and movement of the human body
and animal form.
Organised into a series of hands on
lab assignments, the course ensures
that the student will receive 24 hours
of well paced, intensive professional
training.
Once you have completed this course,
you will have a greater level of understanding
and appreciation of anatomy and its
relevance to 3d disciplines.
You will benefit from the experience
of professional Artists and Life Drawing
Instructors as well as educators,
consultants and Discreet Training
Specialists who have helped to put
this course together.
Pre-Requisites
No prior knowledge drawing or art
is required.
Course Outline
Session 1
Intro: Understanding how the human
form moves in space. Beginning by
examining movement. Abstract the main
masses of the body; head, chest and
hips into their rough geometrical
equivalents.. Observe how these masses
move in space and into what relationships
such movements bring them.
Proportion and how to measure it.
The use of line to structure simple
shapes.
Session 2
Intro to quick sketching.
Gesture in quick sketching. Gesture
as the character or action of the
figure.
Recognising the horizontal and vertical
axis of the body.
Understanding balance and tension
within a pose.
Session 3
Brief introduction to anatomy
Further explorations with line.
Session 4
Drawing the figure in its environment.
Ground plane and placement in pictorial
space.
Session 5
Foreshortening the figure.
Understanding illusory space.
Session 6
Looking at light.
Modelling the human form with tone
to show the 3D nature of its forms.
Blocks of tone to show the transition
from light to dark on the curved forms
of the figure.
Session 7
Movement and expression.
Expressive response to the human form
using water based media.
Session 8
Students will present for review four
drawings produced during the course
sessions. The four selected works
should include one pencil or graphite
drawing, one charcoal drawing, and
one drawing using a water based medium.
Students drawings will be individually
reviewed and the drawings will be
taken home at the end of the session.
