Texturing Principles

This course is a part of our 3D Character Animators / Artist course
This course is not only an entry level course for the new user, but is also relevant to existing users wanting to upgrade or enhance their existing photoshop and 3d skills in particular for use within a 3D environment.

This course covers both the major functional areas of Adobe Photoshop, teaching you the fundamentals and concepts in using Photoshop to create textures for your 3d models, backgrounds for your scenes and the major concepts and techniques for successful texturing of 3d models and in particular characters.

With Photoshop you will learn areas such as creating tiled textures,
exploring filters, layers, masks and alpha channels for material creation in 3d as well as working with pixel ratios and render sizes are also covered.

With 3d character texturing you will be involved in creating detailed and multi-layered maps and ultimately final textures to be applied to your 3d models. Tools such as UVW Unwrap modifier are covered in detail as well as applying the principles learnt in Photoshop to create detailed and unique texture maps.

This course does not just focus on the buttons, but does cover the processes that underlie them and the reasons they are used in production. This not only helps you understand the concepts, but also how to apply them to your own work.

This course teaches you the essential elements and concepts of texturing your models using 3ds Max and fundamentals of using Adobe Photoshop for application to 3d character texturing. You will benefit from the experience of Autodesk Certified Instructors as well as educators, consultants and Autodesk Training Specialists who have helped to put this course together.

Pre-Requisites
3ds Max Fundamentals: Overview, Materials, Lighting & Rendering
3ds Max Fundamentals: Modeling
Prior knowledge of 3ds Max interface and navigation is assumed
A working knowledge of PC's and the Windows operating environment is assumed.

Overview
1. Introduction to Adobe Photoshop.
An introduction to the basic features and functionality of Adobe Photoshop user interface.

2. Creating textures for 3ds Max.
Creating tiled textures and other types of textures for use on your 3d models.

3. Filters, Layers, Masks and Alpha Channels.
Identifies the use of different tools within Photoshop to create a variety of materials for 3d applications such as 3ds Max.

4. Pixel Ratios & Rendering.
A look at creating 2d image files for 3d using correct aspect rations, pixel ratios and for low and high resolution output.

5. UV Mapping
This looks at the concept of uv mapping and how it is used to plan for successful texture application

6. Templating for Photoshop
Using tools such as texporter and 3ds max's unwrap tools, 3d models are unwrapped and flattened down into 2d and then used in photoshop to begin creating the mulitude of layers which make up your models textures

7. Blending Textures
Techniques for blending are covered here in particular learning how to deal with difficult areas on your models as well as for creative treatments.

8. Treatment for Film, Broadcast, Game and Web
Depending on whether your renders are for film , games or web, you need to approach the creation of your materials to cater for this. Single materials that can texture a complete model at 256 x 256 resolution as opposed to a 4000 x 3000 image for film. This is all explained with plenty of hands on.
